And the Bathrooms Will Save You: Duke QB Thinks Improved Toilets Will Boost Fan Support
I think there's a bright future for football in Durham. That's mainly because of David Cutcliffe, who coached these "Manning brothers" that you may or may not have heard about; Cutcliffe's association with Eli and Peyton by default endears future college quarterbacks to his system, even if he happens to have installed it in a stink hole of a football town where the Blue Devils have been the ACC's punching bag since Steve Spurrier left them many years ago.
But now, they have a reason to be excited: new toilets.
Well, in fairness, "they" is actually "Duke quarterback Thaddeus Lewis." But he is excited about the toilets, because he believes that it's going to improve fan support for the Blue Devils in 2009. For serious, folks.
He said female fans had brought the sorry condition of the rest room facilities before the renovation to his attention.
"It was like, 'Wow, the bathrooms were old and beat up, and sometimes we’d hold it until we came home,' " Lewis said fans told him.
Now, you can act all sarcastic and whatnot and be all like "Yeah, sweet, dude, the toilets are going to help your fans actually stay for the game," and that's fine, because that was MY first reaction, too.
But here's the thing: this is a positive attitude coming from Durham as we head into football season, and that in and of itself indicates that the culture Cutcliffe is trying to bring to the city and the school for football season is wholly different from the attitude that you have seen/heard for the past few years.
And yeah, it's bathrooms, so it doesn't really matter, but hey, it's something, right? Oh ... right, and in more serious football-related stuffs that have to do with Duke, Lewis also got a chance to head over to the Mannings Bros football camp for high schoolers.
Why is this important? Well, a) Duke's quarterback is getting pointers from the Manning brothers, which bodes well for the team. And b) if you attend Duke as a stud football recruit who will play quarterback, you're going to get to meet the Mannings, hang out with them, get pointers from them and be tight with the only non-family link that the two of them have. Needless to say, that's a pretty attractive option for anyone seeking to throw footballs for a living.
